Weekend Writing Warriors – 5/5/13

wewriwa_buttonIt’s Weekend Writing Warriors time. Thank you all for your comments last week. I’m back to sharing snippets from my new adult novel, Let Go. Some of you may remember my last eight from this left Ryan shrugged off by Cammy. In this eight, he has been ignoring her for a few days, and while he’s working on an essay for school, she shows up. Hope you like.

With the sun’s beaming light filtering through the enormous window behind him, Ryan smiled as he neared the end of his paper. The smacking of flip-flops against the carpet filled the air and Ryan looked up and saw Cammy standing a few feet away, her arms folded across her chest.

“So there ya are,” she said as she edged closer to him. With a frustrated chuff, Ryan typed and answered,

“Yeah…and?”

“Been lookin’ for ya all mornin’, stud, you’re harder to find than Waldo.”

He sighed heavily and didn’t even look up at her as he added a footnote to his essay.

“Whatcha doin’?” she asked her voice chipper.

“Tryin’ to write a paper,” he said sourly.

Comments are always welcome and appreciated. I’m participating in a charity walk today, so please be patient as it will take me some time to get to reading everyone’s snippet. Comment on mine, and I’ll be sure to return the favour. Click on the above link for the official list of participating writers. Happy Cinco de Mayo!

I will miss the next Sunday as I’m attending a bachelor party in Montreal next weekend.

  1. Lots of conflict between them! I like how she seems to be ignoring his coldness. Either she’s got thick skin or she doesn’t have a clue he’s mad at her.
I’d love to know what expression he has on his face when he says that final line.

    • She thinks she hasn’t done anything wrong and when Ryan tells her otherwise, she thinks it’s no big deal. Ryan basically winces at Cammy when he says his last line, but I felt that I didn’t need to write that.

  2. Very descriptive, loved the flip flop imagery and the stifled annoyance in Ryan’s voice!

  3. I’m betting these two will get together in the end. 🙂 Great line about the “smacking of flip flops”.

    • Good guess, but I don’t want to reveal that just yet. Glad you like my description of the smacking flip-flops, I don’t always capture those descriptions.

  4. Monica Enderle Pierce

There’s something about Cammy that makes me want to smack her. I suspect Ryan’s feeling the same way right about now. ;D

  5. She’s definitely found him at the wrong time.

  6. I like the true-to-life tone of this excerpt. Can’t wait to find out what Cammy has to say for herself. Terrific snippet!

  7. I don’t see Cammy as the type to take a hint. Nice way to leave us hanging.

I think I’d be exactly like this, too. Ignore me and I’m liable to give you the same response. 🙂 Nicely done, Frank. You really captured his anger.

  9. I think we all knew girls like her in high school. They still make them too. 🙂 He was tense and she didn’t care. I thought the flip-flop part was great too.

    • Thanks, everybody seems to like the smacking flip-flops part…and I didn’t think readers would even care about that.

  10. Talk about an oblivious woman. This was great, really showed his frustration with her.
