Weekend Writing Warriors/#8Sunday – “You little!”

I’m back! Back on Weekend Writing Warriors, that is! Be sure to click on the link to see the list of participants. And be sure to visit Rachel Barnard if you stop by as she is a good friend of mine, and is sharing a snippet from her newly released novel.

I’m sharing a snippet from my YA contemporary novella, Never Let Go, which used to be The Burning Night. It’s a finished work that is currently in the editing stage.

This comes from the first chapter of the story. My MC, Melissa, is following her mother up to her room of the country house her family is staying at, when her sister calls her into the kitchen. Little does Melissa know, she’s being set up for a prank.

I followed my mom’s voice when I heard my sister call me from the kitchen. “Hey Mel, could you, like, give me a hand with something?”

After I set my suitcase down, I moved into the kitchen. “Yeah, so what you ne-”

Ashley greeted me with a mischievous grin as she held out a bottle in my direction. Just as I gasped, she lifted her thumb off the cap opening, and the next thing I knew a rush of liquid came spraying in my face.

“Aaahh!!”

I covered my face as the liquid stung my eyes. Ashley let out a great wave of teasing laughter, delighting in my suffering.

“A-ashley, you…you little!”

Typical sister bantering! I’d love to know your thoughts.

I can’t believe how long it’s been since my last post. Let’s just say that life has gotten in the way of my writing over the past few months. The good news is I recently earned my master’s degree in education, and I’ll be going on to do PhD studies in the fall.

Happy Sunday!

  1. You’ve set up an interesting family dynamic. If my sister had done anything like this to me, it would’ve been as a declaration of war … and I would’ve taken it as such. If these two think it’s all good fun, well, they’d be a strange group!

  2. Welcome back! Congratulations on the Master’s degree! Ah yes, these two sisters can really annoy each other, can’t they? A true to life snippet!

  3. Author Jessica E. Subject

Sounds like my house. And one prank always leads to another. Must get revenge! 🙂

  4. I get the feeling Ashley’s going to pay for that, severely. 😉

  5. Yes, siblings can be a torment at times. Good little snippet. Look forward to reading more.

  6. Melissa is going to need revenge for this! Good to have you back. 🙂

  7. That wasn’t nice at all. (I remember once shaking up a bottle of soda and asking my dad to open it–the resulting liquid explosion was hilarious at the time, too.) People are terrible.

  8. Ah, siblings. Good snippet and welcome back. Congrats on the MA and good luck on the Ph.D. from one who has walked that path and is now happily retired from both teaching and teaching others to do same… Write as much “fiction” as possible now…. 😉

  9. LOL! –and yet, I sense a bit of a dark edge to Ashley’s prank. Some foreshadowing, perhaps?

Congrats and very best of luck to you, wherever your road leads.

  10. Fortunately my sister and I never teased each other like that, we ganged up on my younger brother :p

  11. Good to have you back, Frank. And good to see Ashley is still up to her shenanigans!
