6 Tips for Flying on an Overseas Flight

Flying overseas can be exciting and difficult. The difficulty varies depending on the length of the flight; the longer it is, the more difficult it can be. That difficulty can be reduced by following a few steps. Take it from someone that has flown overseas countless times.

  1. Go out for a long walk the day that you’re flying. This is the one chance you will have for exercise before the long flight. You will have to get out earlier if you happen to be taking a flight that leaves mid-morning.
  2. Ease up on alcohol and caffeine during the flight. Neither is good for you overall, so it’s best to avoid period.
  3. Sleep when you are feeling tired. If you happen to be flying to Australia or New Zealand, this is critical because you’ll be on the plane at least 14 hours. Read a book, get up and walk around, and get sleep when you are feeling tired.
  4. Get up and walk about the plane. Do this at least once during the flight. I like to head to the rear lavatory area and stretch a bit there. There’s always ample space to do this. This will help get the blood circulating after sitting down for so long.
  5. Adjust your watch to the time zone of your destination before you take off. I do this just before take-off. It will get you adjusted to your new time zone. You would be surprised how many people forget that they are traveling across several time zones!
  6. Take a sleeping aid. This would be helpful if you know you can’t sleep on planes. But only take a small portion!

These tips will not prevent jet-lag; they reduce the severity of it. Jet-lag is inevitable, no matter what. You will be feeling out of it when you arrive at your destination. This is why you should leave that first day open so you can recover. This means if you are going on a tour, a cruise, or have business meetings to attend, give yourself an extra day in between so that you will be totally fresh and better prepared. 5 Ways to Prevent Catching a Cold

It’s that time of year. The weather is getting colder, people are back to school and their hectic routines. Of course it is the time of year when you see the odd people sniffling, coughing, sneezing etc. Then suddenly, you see that odd number double, triple. Before you know it, it seems like everyone around you is sick! This isn’t fantasy, it’s reality. A couple of weeks ago, I had a student come to class with a nasty cold. I told him he shouldn’t have come to class, but he insisted that he had never missed a day of school. Two days later, three other students caught his cold. I was fortunate to escape unscathed.

It seems impossible to avoid catching a cold, but actually you can. How? Try following these tips:

  1. Wash your hands. Seems redundant, but one of the most common ways people catch colds because they don’t frequently wash their hands. You should definitely make washing hands a habit if you work in an office or a school. A good thing to do is carry some hand sanitizer with you.
  2. Avoid touching your nose, eyes and mouth. This is where the germs enter. If you must touch them, wash your hands first, or use sanitizer if you can’t get to a washroom.
  3. Start taking daily vitamins. Fish oils, B-6 and Magnesium are great ideas. Take two of each everyday and soon you’ll see the difference. I’ve taking these everyday for fourteen years now. Works for me – I haven’t been sick for nearly a year now.
  4. Eat healthy foods. Soup, apples, anything rich with vitamins will do.
  5. Beauty rest. Seven to eight hours is ideal. When you don’t get enough sleep, your immune system weakens, thus leaving you prone to viruses.

 

So stay healthy, and hopefully you won’t be calling in sick this season.

How to deal with a ‘fork in the road’

Decision time

 

I bet you’ve been in this situation? Perhaps more than you’d like to remember? Whether it was a relationship, a job or school, it must have been difficult to choose. And when you do, you likely wonder what would have happened if you had gone the other way. I’ve faced these a number of times, but there’s been one in which I still regret today. A year ago, I was offered a job teaching English in Spain. It had been a dream of mine, but the school seemed like it was not going to be a good fit. The director of the school even admitted there were discipline issues. I only had a day to decide, and I chose not to take the job, though I regretted it after. I even thought about emailing the school a few hours after the decision to reconsider. Then a voice said to me, “That ship has left the port.” I knew I couldn’t go back, and had to move forward. Worse yet, I had made myself sick worrying about this decision.

These moments can often be the most stressful in our lives. So what do you do when you’re in the shoes of our friend in the picture above. I recommend following these tips:

  • make a list of all of the pros and cons of going in either direction and compare them. You should be able to see which has more pros than cons.
  • seek the advice of people who really understand you, like close friends, family or a partner. Because they know you so well, they may know which choice will be the better one. Here’s a pointer if you can do it, contact one of your favorite high school teachers or college professors for help.
  • Ask yourself, “What’s the worst thing that can happen if it doesn’t work out?” If the choice is taking a new job or going to a new school, find out if there is a way to get out and go back to where you started. Think of it as setting out to sea, but leaving the anchor planted on the bottom.
  • If you have time to make the decision, do the above then leave it for twenty-four hours, then finally make your choice. The decision-making will be easier once you have considered all the options.
  • Finally, make your decision and don’t look back! Once that ship has sailed, it has sailed. It won’t come back to the port no matter how much you try to get it back. Just move on and embrace the path you have chosen.

No matter which path you take, there will be pros and cons to both. That is life, and you must accept it as your destiny. So choose wisely, but don’t stress yourself the way I did.
