Weekend Writing Warriors – The Good Sister

warriors-logo-revised

This is the weekly 8-10 sentence blog hop hosted by Weekend Writing Warriors. Thanks for visiting my blog! I’m glad I can be sharing in the Sunday Snippet magic. I hope spring has arrived early in your parts. It’s come early here in Poland!
I’m sharing a snippet from my YA WIP, Love Conquers. Full blurb can be found by clicking the Love Conquers page on my blog.
This snippet takes place in a flashback where heroine, Melissa, recalls the day after her boyfriend dumped her. She has been in bed all day and is grief-stricken. In this scene, her sister, Ashley, tries to boost her spirits by inviting her to a yoga class. But yoga isn’t Melissa’s thing. Creative editing has been used to meet the sentence limit:

Ashley scoots beside me on my bed, stretches her legs out and crosses her ankles. She wraps an arm around my shoulder and rests my head on her chest. My eyes instantly well up with tears. I’m glad she’s being an awesome sister but at the same time I just don’t want her to see me like this.
“I’m goin’ to yoga class in an hour, wanna come? My studio, like, charges sixteen bucks to drop in, but I’ll cover ya.”
She knows perfectly well that I hate yoga. I tried it once with Chris and quickly realized I’m not flexible enough to do all those weird poses. I was amazed I didn’t barf after being in a room for an hour full of people wearing too much cologne or perfume, not to mention stinky feet.
“I’d rather walk barefoot over a bed of red-hot coals,” I groan.

Walk over hot coals? That’s a bit extreme, don’t you think, Melissa? Looks like Ashley is going to have to suggest something better to get her sister out of bed.

Your thoughts are much appreciated. Thanks again for visiting, and be sure to visit other participating authors’ blogs.

I’m up in Warsaw for the day, so it will take me awhile to respond to your comments.

Weekend Writing Warriors – Heartbroken

This is the weekly 8-10 sentence blog hop hosted by Weekend Writing Warriors. Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone and thanks for visiting my blog! I’m glad I’ve finally found a free Sunday to be with you all!

I’m sharing a snippet from my YA WIP, Love Conquers. Unfortunately, it’s not a holiday season read. Full blurb can be found by clicking the Love Conquers page on my blog.

This snippet takes place in a flashback where heroine, Melissa, recalls the day after her boyfriend dumped her. She has been in bed all day, heartbroken. Creative editing has been used to meet the sentence limit.

I’m sprawled out in the middle of my king size bed, the side of my face planted on my pillow as I stare at the picture of me and Mom. I haven’t taken my eyes off it for an hour. What I wouldn’t give to have her here right now so she can hold me. “What am I gonna do, Mom?” I whimper with hundreds of memory bubbles bursting at once in my head. They fuel the pain that’s been crushing my heart. Every passionate moment I spent with him over three years is gone. Just gone, and I can never get it back.
My blankets and sheets are twisted like I haven’t left my bed for days as I dig my fingers into the pillow case. Actually, I haven’t left this bed at all except for a couple of trips to the bathroom.

Normally, my snippets include dialogue, but I thought a little narrative description would be nice. I consider myself weak in this area, so your feedback will be very helpful!

Anyway, poor Melissa! Her breakup with her boyfriend is important to the story as it plunges her into a rough situation later in the story. More from this scene next week, I hope!

In other news, I have officially decided that I’m going to leave Poland after contract finishes. I like it here, but not enough to stay another year. I’m not sure where I will end up, but I would like some more adventure abroad. Living abroad, for me, the best experience anyone can get – if they are fortunate enough to have it of course!

Thanks for your comments!

Weekend Writing Warriors – “Come ‘ere and say that!” #8Sunday

Welcome to the weekly 8-10 sentence blog hop hosted by Weekend Writing Warriors and happy post-Cinco de Mayo! Click on the link for participation guidelines, as well as the official list of participating authors. Thanks for including me in your Sunday reading!

Continuing with another snippet from Due For Love, we pick up from last week’s edition. Melissa was attempting to water the plants in her dad’s garden when the patio deck suddenly burns her feet (it’s plus ninety outside). Her ex-boyfriend, who has a part-time job taking care of Melissa’s next-door neighbor’s house, laughs at her misfortune. The snippet has been formatted to meet the ten sentence rule.

Warning: snippet contains coarse language; reader discretion advised

Mocking laughter sails through the air behind me as I pour an entire can’s worth of water all around my feet in order to cool this damn deck down, before collapsing onto the patio couch.

“Melissa, yo-you’re too much,” Chris teases in between guffawing. After three years together, I can recognize that sometimes-squeaky voice instantly, and if he’d knew what was good for him, he’d shut the fuck up before I rip his damn throat out!

I snap my head over my shoulder, wincing as I caress the bottoms of feet, to find Chris with his arms wrapped over the fence. “The hell you laughin’ at?!”

“You…the star of your new show,” he quips with a cheeky smile.

       “What fuckin’ show?”

“Melissa on a Hot Tin Deck!”

Ignoring the burns, I jump to my feet and lock eyes with the boy that killed three years of love with five cruel words. “Come ‘ere and say that to my face, ya little shit!”

Well Chris should be more sensitive – and run for his life! Your thoughts and feedback are much appreciated! And many thanks to everyone for congratulating me on my new job!

I’m off to Madrid on Wednesday, which means I will be away from W.W.W. for a bit. I’ll be visiting friends in Spain, Portugal, Poland and Germany over three weeks, and I will finally get to meet my friend, Elyzabeth M. Valey!

Hopefully, spring is being good to you wherever you are! See you again soon!
